Our Journey THROUGH THE S.M.O.K.E.

Donnell & Jindia Blount are the passionate co-founders of S.M.O.K.E. Athletic League, a nonprofit organization they launched in 2018 in Mansfield, Texas.

What began as a small local initiative to make sports accessible and fair for kids in their community has grown into a powerful nationwide movement. For seven years, they have defied the doubters who said “free athletics will never work.” Today, S.M.O.K.E. Athletic League continues to expand, reaching hundreds of aspiring athletes and youth mentees across the country.Rooted deeply in faith, mentorship, and the belief that sports can transform lives, Donnell and Jindia serve as beacons of light for the young people they work with. Through their athletic programs, they build meaningful relationships that extend far beyond the court — helping shape character, resilience, discipline, and faith in every child they encounter.

As devout Christians, the Blounts are committed to servant leadership. Jindia often says,

“Prayer, teamwork, and trusting God through our hands-on work with the kiddos is the key to our success.”

Jindia’s passion for this work is also a living tribute to two of the greatest influences in her life: her brother, Juan O’Neil May, and her father, Henry Clay May.

Juan, a Marine Corps veteran and beloved community figure, had a special gift for developing young basketball talent. He mentored players like Jared Dudley and his own little cousin both of whom went on to play at high levels, including the NBA. Tragically, Juan was shot and killed by an off-duty officer at a family gathering on June 22, 2014, passing away in Jindia’s arms.

Her father, Henry “Jimmy” May, was a serial entrepreneur with a heart for youth. He passed away on November 2, 2023 — a day Jindia says “another piece of her died with him.” In his honor, Jindia co-founded The Henry Clay Foundation, an organization dedicated to serving at-risk youth and underserved communities.

The Blounts’ work is driven by these powerful legacies. Even in moments of pain and loss, their faith, perseverance, and love for the community keep them moving forward.

Through S.M.O.K.E. Athletic League and The Henry Clay Foundation, Donnell and Jindia continue to pour into the next generation on the court, in the classroom, and through life’s toughest challenges — with the hope that every young person they serve will be inspired, strengthened, and reminded of God’s grace.
